Giani Gurbachan Singh meets Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana in Patiala jail

PATIALA, Punjab—SGPC appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh paid visit to the Central jail of Patiala on March 5 to meet death row convict Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana.  Bhai Balwant Singh is being confined in the Patiala jail for assassinating the former Chief Minister of Punjab Beant “Singh”.

Sikh24 has learnt that the Giani Gurbachan Singh was urged by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee to meet Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana in relation to mercy petition moved before President of India seeking cancellation of death sentence addressed to Bhai Rajoana.

In a status updated on Facebook account, the foster sister of Bhai Rajoana Bibi Kamaldeep Kaur wrote that Giani Gurbachan Singh assured Bhai Rajoana of taking up the issue of mercy petition to the President of India beside with the Union Home Ministry. Giani Gurbachan Singh also promised Bhai Rajoana to rake up the issue of release of political Sikh prisoners with Union Home Ministry.

It may be recalled here that Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana had started hunger strike in protest of delay in processing of mercy petition moved by SGPC before the President of India seeking cancellation of his death sentence. Bhai Rajoana was upset at SGPC for not following up the petition by SGPC.

Bhai Rajoana had to be hospitalized at that time and the SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh badungar had consolidated him by paying visit and assuring him of taking up the matter with President of India.

Meanwhile, it has come to fore that Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana was taken to the Rajindra Hospital of Patiala by the Jail authorities today due to ear pain. Interacting with media, Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana said that the SGPC and Sant Samaj ought to come forward to ensure the release of political Sikh prisoners languishing across various jails of India.
