Gurbani Word Of The Day: kaaraj

ਕਾਰਜਿ (kaaraj)
Meaning: noun: Work, task, affair.

Quote:
ਸੰਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਰਜਿ ਆਪਿ ਖਲੋਇਆ   ਹਰਿ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਰਾਵਣਿ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ॥
santaa ke kaaraj aap khaloiaa   har kaṁm karaavaṇ aaiaa raam.
The Divine Himself has come forward to resolve the affairs of His saints, and He Himself has come to complete their tasks. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 783

Message: We built this city!

Some Sikh scholars opine that the hymn from where this verse is taken was uttered by Guru Arjan Sahib on the completion of the big pond (sarovar) at Amritsar as an expression of his humility and deep gratitude towards the Almighty.

On the completion of such a mammoth task of setting up an altogether new city, along with the uniquely beautiful shrine (Darbar Sahib), the Guru humbly acknowledges the magnanimity of the Almighty.

The sarovar at Amritsar (the city itself received its name from the sarovar which was named amrit-sar, the pool of nectar) was excavated by Guru Ram Das and the shrine (Darbar Sahib) built in the middle of it by Guru Arjan Sahib.

As can be seen in Guru Granth Sahib and in the lives of the Gurus, the Gurus were really humble people who achieved difficult feats and wonders with the help of their disciples.

Giving up one’s egoism and affirming that the Divine hand is behind all accomplishments is one of the central themes of Guru Granth Sahib.

Etymology: Modification of Sanskrit kaarya (to be done; business), which further evolved to Pali karya/kayya → Prakrit kajj (action, duty) → Sindhi kaaju , Lahndi/Punjabi kaaj (work, festivity).
