Sirsa Cult’s support to Shiromani Akali Dal: SGPC appoints Investigation Committee to trace guilty leaders

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—On the directions of SGPC appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh, SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar has appointed a three member committee to probe the entire incident and find out the guilty leaders who went to Sirsa cult seeking his support in assembly elections.

SGPC Senior Vice President Baldev Singh Kiampuri, General Secretary Amarjit Singh Chawla and executive member Gurcharan Singh Grewal have been nominated in the investigation committee. The Investigation Committee has been asked to submit its report within a week.

Several Malwa based leaders of ruling Shiromani Akali Dal had gone to Sirsa cult seeking support from its chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the assembly polls. On February 1, the Sirsa cult’s Political Affairs Committee head Ram Singh had announced to support SAD-BJP alliance in the assembly.  He directed the cult disciples to vote for SAD-BJP affiliated candidates from their respective constituencies. It had come to limelight that the ruling SAD leaders had promised to Sirsa cult of lifting ban on their gatherings in Punjab.

In 2007, Jathedar of Takht Sri Damdama Sahib had issued a decree directing the Sikh masses to socially boycott the Sirsa cult chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim and his disciples. However, the ruling SAD’s leaders went to Sirsa cult without caring of the sanctity of religious edict issued from Takht Sri Damdama Sahib.

Initially, all the Takht Jathedars and SGPC officials had switched off their mobiles to avoid media queries pertaining to violation of religious decree. However, DSGMC President Manjit Singh GK released a statement against SAD leaders’ act of demanding support from SAD leaders after 5 pm of February 4. Similarly, a day after election all the Takht Jathedars and SGPC opened their mouths and started releasing statements condemning the visit.

It is being speculated that the reason behind SGPC officials and Takht Jathedars’ action against SAD leaders is upcoming Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Elections that are expected to be held on February 26.
