2017 Assembly Polls: Election Commission imposes prohibition on Election Campaigning

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Exactly 48 hours before the voting deadline, the Election Commission (EC) today prohibited the candidates from further campaigning after 5 PM. Guidelines in this regard were issued yesterday in accordance with the provisions enacted in the section 126 of Representation of People’s Act-1951.

With the imposition of EC’s order, election campaigns by all candidates of all the 117 assembly constituencies and for the by-poll on Parliamentary seat of Amritsar seat have ended. All the political leaders, functionaries and party activists, who don’t belong to the concerned constituencies, have been ordered to leave.

The Police administration has been also directed to keep a close check on the community centres, guest houses and lodges so that the outsiders, if any, could be kept housed without causing any disturbance during the electoral process. The Identity cards of those residing in the community centres, guest houses and lodges will also be checked by the Election and Police administration.

The Election Commission has also put ban on the advertisement seeking votes in TV channels, radio channels and newspapers so that the voters cannot be influenced from taking an independent decision of voting.
