CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Former Chief Minister of Punjab Surjit Barnala today passed away at the age of 92. He was admitted at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) of Chandigarh due to cardiac failure. Barnala was sworn in as Chief Minister of Punjab on September 29, 1985 and held the post till 11th May, 1987.
Surjit Barnala had sanctioned the entrance of paramilitary forces into the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Harmandir Sahib under garb of Operation Black Thunder on April 30, 1986.
Being a loyalist of the Indian state, he remained appointed as the Governor of Tamilnadu, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar Islands. He was also nominated as a candidate for Vice-Presidency in 1997 but was defeated by Krishna Kant at that time.
Barnala was the Union Agriculture Minister in the Moraji Desai government and the Union Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Cabinet.
Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Punjab Parkash Badal, Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab Sukhbir Badal and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee head Captain Amarinder Singh have extended condolences to the bereaved family.
In a tweet at 7:00 pm Indian PM Narinder Modi wrote, “Pained by demise of Shri Surjit Singh Barnala. His rich service & contribution to the nation will be remembered. Condolences to his family.”
