Gurbani Word Of The Day: Mhoorat

ਮੂਰਤੁ (mhoorat)
Meaning: noun: Period of 48 minutes (2 gharee or 1/4 pahar).
Quote:
ਸੋ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਭਲਾ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਹੈ   ਜਿਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਸਾਈ॥
so mhoorat bhalaa saňjog hai   jit milai gusaaee.

Blessed is that period of spiritual union, when one meets with the Master of the universe. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 709
Message: There are those who believe in auspicious and inauspicious moments. Best month to buy a car? Best time to move into a house? Many ask astrologers to find a right moment for them to begin something new in life. Is there such a thing as an auspicious or inauspicious moment?

The verse tells us that each and every moment is auspicious when the Divine is in our mind. By being aware of His presence at all times, the mind is freed from delusion and fear. Best are ALL those moments when one is mindful of the Almighty. All moments and times become good when we are in good company and aware of the divine presence in us and others around us.

ਸਫਲ ਮੂਰਤੁ ਸਫਲਾ ਘੜੀ   ਜਿਤੁ ਸਚੇ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ॥
Fruitful is that mhoorat and fruitful is that gharee, when one nurtures love for the true Lord. – Guru Ram Das, Guru Granth Sahib, 44

Etymology: From Sanskrit muhoort (moment; measure of time = 48 minutes).

Notes: The word moorati (form, image) which appears often with a sihari in Gurbani, comes from a different root, from Sanskrit moorti (image).
