ਘੜੀ (ghaṛee)
Meaning: noun: Period of 24 minutes (about 1/8 of a quarter of the day).
Quote:
ਕਬੀਰ ਏਕ ਘੜੀ ਆਧੀ ਘਰੀ ਆਧੀ ਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਆਧ॥ ਭਗਤਨ ਸੇਤੀ ਗੋਸਟੇ ਜੋ ਕੀਨੇ ਸੋ ਲਾਭ॥
kabeer ek ghaṛee aadhee gharee aadhee hooň te aadh.
bhagtan setee gosṭe jo keene so laabh.
Kabir! For a period of 24 minutes, half of it, or half of that; whatever it is, it is worthwhile to converse (have a dialogue) with the devout. – Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 1377
The benefits of association with good and wise people (bhagtan setee goste) are beyond words. Once we are involved with right-minded people, we will find ourselves wiser and on the path to enlightenment. This would ultimately strengthen us to face any obstructions in the journey of life.
ਸਾਈ ਘੜੀ ਸੁਲਖਣੀ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ॥
Blessed is that gharee that is passed by remembering the Name of the Divine. – Guru Arjan Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, 819
Notes: The period of 24 hours (a day and a night) comprises 8 pahar and 64 gharee, as indicated in the following verse:
ਆਠ ਜਾਮ ਚਉਸਠਿ ਘਰੀ ਤੁਅ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਰਹੈ ਜੀਉ॥
(O Divine!) My soul continues to behold You everywhere, eight quarters or sixty four gharee (i.e. 24 hours) of the day. – Bhagat Kabir, Guru Granth Sahib, 1377
Etymology: From Sanskrit ghaṭee (pot; water clock, period of 24 minutes) → Pali ghaṭee (pot) → Prakrit ghaḍee (pot, water clock) → Sindhi ghaṛee (water pot, water clock) → Punjabi ghaṛee (water clock).
