AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Speaking at a meeting with the Dharam Parchar Committee and Sikh History Research Board at Fatehgarh Sahib, SGPC President Prof. Kirpal Singh Badungar said that they would begin efforts to restore the scriptures of ‘Sikh Reference Library’, burnt and ransacked by the Indian army during the June 1984 armed incursion into the sanctum sanctorum, Sri Harmandir Sahib. He said that an appeal would be made to worldwide Sikh masses to share any type of traditional rare Sikh scriptures and other artefacts they own.
Taking strong notice of distortion being made to Sikh history during recent times, Prof. Badungar said that the SGPC was committed to motivate research work on Sikh history and to modernize the ‘Sikh Reference Library’.
Traditional Sikh scriptures were burnt and looted by the Indian army during Operation Bluestar. Eyewitnesses had exposed the looting of Holy Sikh Scriptures by the Indian army during the attack. The SGPC had made several efforts in the past to get back the removed Sikh scriptures from the government but none of their efforts bore fruit. Recently in a visit to Sri Harmandir Sahib, a senior Indian army officer denied possession of any kind of Sikh scriptures.
One should respect the fundamental right of freedom of religion . A happy peaceful co existence is also important.

We Sikhs recognise the RSS for it truly is and what it can become with all the patronage it gets from the BJP Central Govt. The RSS clapped and cheered and their brethren stoked communal unrest in Punjab for decades (they were instrumental in forcing through 1966 referedum in Punjab leading to Hindu self dtermination culminating in cleavage of Punjab to form Haryana) which led to political pressure on Indira Gandhi to try and prove to Hindu electorate she was even more pro-Hindu than the RSS and its political wing the BJP. If even one RSS man clapped and congratulated Indira Gandhi on attacking Darbar Sahib and putting a bullet into the very flesh of our Guru Granth Sahib not to mention the thousands of Sikh pilgrims trapped there that shows your true colours. You do not stand in solidarity with Sikhs because your fundamental beliefs run contrary to and are antithetical to Sikh beliefs of religious tolerance, egalitarianism and that all men / women are equal regardless of birth. The RSS were instrumental in bring about an hysterical atmosphere in which genocide of the Sikhs could happen. They were involved in whipping up communal tensions and made the 1966 referendum for Punjabi Hindu self determination possible and were foremost in rejecting the Anandpur Sahib Resolutions so they are an enemy of the Sikhs as much as their ideologue brothers the Islamist Moghuls were.

You need to have multiple places and multiple methods to store ones history.
Oral form of history transmissions has been used in India since time immemorial and is also effective.
It never turns into mythology except for those who are disbelievers.
Oral form of history transmission is used by the likes of the Australian aboringinal and North American Native Indian peoples and look what has happened to them. You need physical material evidence – artefacts, relics and written evidence particularly from multiple sources including those that are inimical to your faith – to prove the validity of your history otherwise you can make up Chinese whispers style untruths which are then just accepted as being ‘truth’ by subsequent generations. This has happened in India.
Okay multiple ways history can be kept.

SGPC and Punjab govt need to set up a history dept independently to record our history.

They need to have a back up library built in different parts of the world for its safe custody.
Also they need to pass history down orally from generation to generation.
Fortunately a large number of historical Sikh artefacts and relics are in the private hands of Sikhs and foreign museums like the British Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum. Very important that Sikhs resist bogus attempts at ‘repatriating’ such material – the Kohinoor diamond that resides in crown jewels and Duleep Singh’s bones buried in England means for example the history of the Khalsa Raj of Maharaja Ranjit Singh cannot easily be adulterated and erased in India. The preservation of material evidence is essential to a people which is why the Darbar Sahib library was looted and destroyed in the first place – the Romans did the same with their destruction of the Jewish temple in Jerusalem, an attempt to break the Jews of their sense of identity. If you just pass ‘history’ down orally from generation to generation you end up creating mythological stories which are open to pressure from rulers of the day who will subvert and pervert the message of Gurbani to give their rule an appearance of moral and spiritual legitimacy. Unless SGPC cleans its house and become totally independent and start caring for sikhs at large no Sikh cares what they are doing. Their track record of past 30 plus years is pathetic. They have allowed RSS and hindutva forces to take over Gurdwaras. idols of hindu gods are being placed on the grounds owned by SGPC, murals of hindu gods are being painted on ceilings in Harmandir Sahib Complex, scripters praising devi’s and demigods not written in Guru Granth Sahib ji are being recited for weeks at length in Gurdwaras under SGPC or DMGC control.Beadbhi of Granth Sahibs is being routinely carried out. I can keep on going. Unless they show by deeds not words i.e working for release of Sikh prisoners who are languishing in jails, justice for victims of 1984 genocide, complete accounting of persons killed in so called Blue star debacle,river water issues and so on they can earn respect and support from Sikh community at large.
