Punjab Elections Likely To Be Held At End Of January

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—With the activities of the Vice-Election Commissioner Sandeep Saxena in Punjab, it is being speculated that the assembly polls in Punjab, which are due in 2017, might be held at the end of January.

Sikh24 has learnt that the Election Commission of India might impose the code of conduct anytime after December 15 as the usual time gap between election and code of conduct remains as 40-45 days.

Sandeep Saxena held a meeting with Chief Secretary of Punjab Sarvesh Kaushal, Additional Chief Secretary (Home Affairs) S. Jagpal Singh Sandhu, Additional Chief Secretary (Finance) Satish Chandra and DGP Suresh Arora on December 8 to discuss the prior arrangements for elections due in 2017. Sikh24 has learnt that the Election Commission expressed dissatisfaction over the working of Administration in Punjab on issues of disturbed law & order condition and drug menace. The EC reportedly expressed satisfaction over the working Ludhiana police but irked over the working of Police of Tarn Taran and Amritsar police.

Sources have informed that the Elections Commission had asked the Punjab government to displace all the PPS (Punjab Police Services) officers from heading Police districts but the Punjab government has not taken any action. 

It has come to the fore that the Chief Secretary of Punjab Sarvesh Kaushal urged the Election Commission to complete elections in Punjab in a single phase for it being a border state.

Sources have confirmed that the Vice-Election Commissioner has promised to facilitate 600 companies of paramilitary force to be deployed in Punjab to successfully complete the election process.
