Gurbani Word Of The Day: jagat

ਜਗਤ (jagat)
Meaning: noun: The world.

Quote:
ਹਰਿ ਮੰਦਰੁ ਏਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਹੈ   ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਘੋਰੰਧਾਰ॥
har maňdar eh jagat hai   gur bin ghoraňdhaar.
This world is the temple of God; however, without the Guru’s wisdom, there is pitch darkness (ignorance in the minds of people; they do not to realize this). – Guru Amar Das, Guru Granth Sahib, 1346

Message: The Gurus tell us that the whole existence of the universe is replete with the very existence of the Divine, who is equally present everywhere and in everything—He is omnipresent. The Creator is self-created, and out of His own self, He created the world, over which He watches.

Gurbani holds that the Divine created this world in such a way that it has come actually from the existence of the Divine Himself. Therefore, a realized mind understands that the whole world, our existence, is the temple of God. But to realize Him as such, He first needs to be realized within. From there the search can expand without. For seeing the Divine in all things (including within) and knowing all beings as one’s own self is realization. In the Divine and as the Divine, all life reveals itself as being really one and indivisible.

Recognise humanity and divinity in everyone. When we see people that way, it changes our perception of the world.

Etymology: From Sanskrit jagat (moving, living; men and animals; the world) → Pali jagat (the world).
