SRINAGAR, J&K—A Sikh delegation comprising Dr. Manjit Singh Bhoma, Bhai Sarabjit Singh Jammu and Bhai Satnam Singh Kanda met the Governor of Jammu & Kashmir N.N. Vohra on October 7 at state’s capital Srinagar.  The delegation was asked by the SGPC appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh to apprise the Governor with challenges emerged before J&K Sikhs amid insurgency in the state.

The delegation met the Governor at Raj Bhawan and expressed concern over growing instability in the state.  The delegation raised the following demands in front of the Governor –

  1. Appointment of a Welfare Board for Sikhs in J&K
  2. 10% reservation for Sikh candidates in Government Jobs

“Governor N.N. Vohra carefully listened to our demands.  He was happy to meet with the Sikh leaders and promised us to raise the demands before PDP-BJP led J&K government,” the delegation told Sikh24.

“Sikhs in J&K have being targeted both by pro-freedom J&K residents and the paramilitary forces after the insurgency emergence. Martyrdom of pro-freedom militant leader Burhan Wani in July 2016 had outraged the Kashmir masses and the valley has been witnessing complete shut down since then,” they added.

“We hope the Governor will work hard to resolve the issues so that the Sikh community can be at peace.”

  1. How are they going to create safe zones by dividing up the state ? segregate populations ? This type of solution can only come from a person who doesn’t know the meaning of human rights. The problem in Kashmir is fundamental denial of human rights ever since so called independence of India some 69 years back. You cannot control people by use of force and that what has been going on for too long unless this butchery by the armed forces is stopped this cycle of violence will continue with no end in sight.
