Sikh political prisoner Bhai Daya Singh Lahora Attends Mother’s Funeral

SANGRUR, Punjab—On September 14, Bhai Daya Singh Lahora was given a short parole to attend his mother’s funeral.  Bhai Daya Singh Lahora was taken to Ahmedgarh (Sangrur, Punjab) amidst high security from the Tihar Jail.

Bhai Daya Singh Lahora performed the last rites of his mother, and thanked the Sikh sangat and leaders for coming from far and near.  He was not allowed to visit his native residence and taken back to New Delhi immediately after the funeral.

Bhai Lahoria’s mother, Bibi Isher Kaur had passed away on September 12 around 9:00 AM in the morning.  She was 105 years old.

It is noteworthy that Bhai Daya Singh Lahoria is one of the political prisoners whose release is being sought by 83 years old human rights activist Bapu Surat Singh.  

Bhai Lahoria is currently incarcerated in the Tihar Jail, New Delhi.  He was charged with the abduction of the son of Congress leader Ram Niwas Mirdha in Jaipur in 1995 as the co-accused along with Prof. Davinderpal Singh Bhullar.  Following the charges, Bhai Lahoria fled to the United States and was later extradited to India in 1997.

Bhai Daya Singh’s wife, Kamaljeet Kaur, also spent over 11 years in prison.  She also suffered physical torture at the hands of Indian police.
