Former Chief Editor of Akali Patrika S. Bharpoor Singh Balbir Passes Away

JALANDHAR, Punjab—S. Bharpoor Singh Balbir, the former Chief Editor of the vernacular Punjabi newspapers ‘ਅਕਾਲੀ ਪੱਤਰਿਕਾ’ and ‘ਅੱਜ ਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼’, passed away on August 22 following a prolonged affliction. He was 89 years old and was residing in his residence at Jalandhar. He was renowned for his attractive speeches justifying the need of Sikh sovereignty.

The Chief Organizing Secretary of the Youth Akali Dal Amritsar, S. Papalpreet Singh, said that the loss of S. Bharpoor Singh Balbir can’t be fulfilled.  “His legendary speeches about the need of Sikh sovereignty will always remain inculcating patriotism in Sikh masses,” he added.

Notably, during the convention of AISSF in 1982 S. Bharpoor Singh Balbir had proved in his speech that the Sikh sovereignty was needed for the safe existence of the Sikh community. S. Bharpoor Singh Balbir had spoken in reaction to the contention made by Bibi Rajinder Singh (former SGPC member and daughter of Master Tara Singh) using the Gurbani script ‘ਰਾਜੁ  ਚਾਹਉ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਨ ਚਾਹਉ ਮਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲਾਰੇ ॥’.
