USA: United Sikhs Initiates Emergency Response To Louisiana Flood

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA—Over the last two weeks, there has been much devastation caused by the historic floods in Louisiana. This is likely the worst U.S. disaster the country has experienced since Superstorm Sandy in 2012. Thousands of lives have been severely impacted. Innumerable families have been evacuated and are now placed in shelters.

UNITED SIKHS’ Emergency Response team is in Baton Rouge and has initiated their need assessment program with the Salvation Army, Red Cross, FEMA, Governor’s Office, Mayor’s Office, local churches and the Louisiana VOAD. Currently there is an immediate need for volunteers. Nurses, mental health consultants, doctors, construction workers are especially needed but anyone with the yearning to assist may apply.

UNITED SIKHS had a meeting with Salvation Army coordinators including their Disaster Training Coordinator, Ross Patterson at their warehouse. The following materials are also in dire need:
  1. Hygiene goods like toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, baby wipes, diapers, etc.
  2. Cleaning materials like clorox, mops, brooms, buckets, etc.
  3. Emergency Relief materials like bandages, alcohol, etc

If you, your Gurdwara or sangat would like to assist in this effort, please feel free to write back to  [email protected] or call us at 1-469-222-6288

According to Louisiana Governor, John Bel Edwards, at least 40,000 homes have suffered some damage and it is not clear how many homes are uninhabitable. UNITED SIKHS asks everyone to answer this clarion call for assistance so our neighbors may begin to experience some semblance of normalcy. Gurvinder Singh, Director Sikh Aid, said , “Not every region is equally serviced, we have seen this in Katrina and a big response is needed. All available resources are needed on deck”.
