AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhik Committee has slammed the Akali Dal led Punjab government for remaining unsuccessful in controlling the desecration of Gurbani scriptures across the state.
In a press note shared with Sikh24, SGPC President Avtar Singh Makkar expressed deep pain over the desecration of a pothi at Bhagta Bhai Ka village of Bathinda on June 25. Lashing out at the Punjab government and the police, Makkar said that the desecration incidents are increasing day by day but the police and administration is watching as a mute spectator. He added that the police was doing nothing besides registering cases against unidentified culprits. Warning the Punjab government of serious consequences, Makkar said that the ‘hard earned’ peace of Punjab will be in danger if the Punjab government does not take any strict action to nab the culprits.
Similarly, the SGPC appointed Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh also strongly condemned the fresh desecration incident and appealed the Gurdwara managements to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras to avoid any untoward incident.
It is notable here that pages of Gutka Sahib (Holy scripture) were found torn in village Bhagta Bhai Ka of Bathinda district. Slogans ‘Narendra Modi Zindabad’ and ‘RSS Zindabad’ were written on the desecrated pages of Gutka Sahib by the culprits.
SGPC President’s statement has come as a surprise since he is a leader of the Akali Dal. Avtar Singh Makkar was nominated as the president of the SGPC by Akali Dal President Sukhbir Badal.
Should Avtar Singh Makkar resign from @Akali_Dal_ due to continued #beadbi cases in #Punjab? #GuruGranthSahib #SGPC
