Paramilitary forces deployed in Amritsar Ahead of 32nd Anniversary of Darbar Sahib Invasion

AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—To spread wave of panic among the citizens of Punjab about 32nd anniversary of Holocaust day, the Union government of India has deployed paramilitary forces in Amritsar Sahib.  So far, six companies of different paramilitary forces have been deployed around the city already.

Confirming the development, Police Commissioner Amar Singh Chahal informed that five companies of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) and one company of ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police) have been deployed at main points of the city. He added that the District police have 3500 cops while more will also be called from the neighboring districts. He said that cameras will also be deployed at key points of the city.

“This is utterly disgusting, it reminds us of how 1984 may have been like with mnilitary forces everywhere,” Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Chandigarh told Sikh24.  “We came here on a routine pilgrimage of Sri Darbar Sahib, but today, it reminded me of 1984 when we saw Indian soldiers everywhere,” he added.

A local Sikh from Amritsar, Jaswant Singh said, “This is nothing new.  We are used to seeing paramilitary deployed around Sri Darbar Sahib from the past few years.  I don’t think there’s anything to be scared, however, existence of paramilitary on the anniversary of Operation Blue Star reminds us of how the army would have entered our holiest shrine 32 years ago.”

“The Union government of India doesn’t miss any opportunity to defame Sikh community at any point. Each year the paramilitary forces are deployed to give impression like something very big is going to happen,” Jaswant Singh said.

Two years ago, a clash between SGPC task force and some Sikhs came into light but the mainstream media aired the incidents negatively on a big level.  While during 1984 remembrance programs, Sikh Sangat visits the shrine to remember its martyrs, the atmosphere is mostly peaceful, while during the morning program at Sri Akal Takht Sahib, thousands of Sikh youth are seen raising pro-Khalistan slogans.

In addition to the Union Government, the SGPC has also tightened security inside the Darbar Sahib complex.  SGPC is trying to avoid any possibility of clash as Giani Gurbachan Singh will be delivering a speech. Last year, during Bandi Chor Diwali celebrations, Sikh youth raised slogans and did not allow Giani Gurbachan Singh to speak. Instead, Sarbat Khalsa 2015 appointed interim Jathedar of Akal Takht Sahib, Dhian Singh Mand addressed the sangat. Giani Gurbachan Singh was removed from the post of Akal Takht Sahib by Sarbat Khalsa 2015, however, he has continued to act as customary Jathedar appointed by the SGPC, which has altogether denounced Sarbat Khalsa 2015 gathering.

As per reports from internal SGPC sources, its officials have ordered the Task Force to remain present throughout the day on June 1984. It has also refused vacation to any SGPC Task Force members for June 6 gathering.

  1. We must be careful in these anniversaries .Some agent may provoke by shooting in a crowd .
It could spin out of control and there could be a blood bath.
We need to say our prayers in our homes and avoid going into a cycle of Violence.
We must remember that Nations are made and destroyed by Empires we need to understand this.

    • You are talking for the agent provocateurs Badal gang and Hinduvta mafia and we know perfectly what your threats are all about. ‘Keep your heads down, do not commemorate the attack on Darbar Sahib in 1984 (indeed try to forget about it and just accept it as some kind of collective punishment), stay in your homes (preferably where you can keep your turbans out of sight so as not to offend people like you), keep religion in the home and not in society where it can do some social good’ or else we will have the army kill you. Disgraceful and shameful abuse of power in the run up to the elections. How stupid do you think we are that we don’t know your dirty little game? Nations are made and destroyed by the actions and inactions of individuals.

  2. I cannot believe what the Sikhs in Amritsar must be going through to be reminded of the bloodiest battle against Harmander Sahib in 1984. The Indian Government are disgusting they are adament in provoking the young Sikhs in Punjab and elsewhere…… What need is there for all these forces to be deployed ….. these butchers have their own agenda and as on the other hand they are saying they want peace in Punjab. Badal and his other chamche are quite happy to sit back and see this happen….. Raaj Karega Khalsa.

  3. I am worried about the possibility of agents provocateurs committing predetermined acts to facilitate an attack on innocent Sikhs by the authorities.

    • That is a 100 percent real threat. It has happened before and it sadly looks like its happening again.

  4. How insensitive can you possibly get?! Such brazen stupidity on the part of the Sarkar. Sikhs are already bitterly commemorating the gravest injury in living memory caused to them 32 years ago and you now add insult to that by sending more soldiers to rub mirch into the wound?! A tactic designed to intimidate Sikhs which will only backfire as it will remind Sikhs of the inept, stupid heavy handedness of using bloody minded force against them in the first place. Even the Britishers had the common sense and decency not to turn up at Jaliianwala Bagh again with their soldiers upon the anniversary of their massacre there. Well done India, you have clearly not learnt the bitter lessons of the past and are intent upon merely repeating them. Arrest of Sikh youth, killing of Sikhs on the street by police, tolerating beadbi of Guru Granth Sahib – what further insult will you pile onto the Sikhs next for us to endure? Perhaps now that you have demolished the drinking water kiosk at Gurdwara Sis Ganj in Delhi you might be thinking next of erecting a statue of Indira Gandhi there when we try to commemorate the holocaust of Sikhs in November? Utter madness – the idiot politicians who thought this outrage up – yes I am looking at you Badal and your Hinduvta handlers – should be arrested for sedition for the incendiary damage they are doing.
