Sikh Coalition Works with Local Governments to Commemorate the Birth of the Khalsa

2012-04-30_bham_vaisakhiNew York— Sikhs across the country held events and worked with the Sikh Coalition and their local governments to commemorate Vaisakhi, the birth of the Khalsa. These initiatives provided valuable opportunities to share information about the Sikh faith and identity with the broader American public.

With support from the Sikh Coalition, community members in California, Washington, Texas, Arizona, South Carolina, New Jersey and New York engaged their lawmakers, working with them to pass Vaisakhi resolutions. Students, libraries and community groups worked to organize presentations and Sikh awareness events in their communities. Additionally, U.S. Congressman John Garamendi led efforts to add support to a national Vaisakhi resolution recognizing this important occasion.

The work of educating Americans about the Sikh faith and traditions does not stop now that Vaisakhi is over. The Sikh Coalition has a number of resources for conducting presentations, arranging library displays, organizing film screenings and holding open houses at local gurdwaras. In addition, resolutions are an easy way to engage with lawmakers and can lead to greater appreciation of the Sikh community.

The Sikh Coalition is grateful to the Sikh communities of California, Washington, Texas, Arizona, South Carolina, New Jersey and New York for their educational efforts that make a lasting difference. We look forward to working together to ensure that Americans learn more about their Sikh friends and neighbors.
