UK: Film To Highlight Position Of Minority Group In Afghanistan

LEICESTER, UK—On Wednesday 4th May 2016, a charity working to advance interfaith understanding is hosting an event open to all to raise awareness about the plight of a minority community in Afghanistan.

St Philip’s Centre will welcome film maker and author Bobby Singh Bansal who has visited and recorded the lives of Sikh diaspora communities around the world. His film ‘The Sikhs of Kabul – A forgotten community’ will be shown to those attending the event alongside his eye witness account about the everyday challenges the community faces.

Bobby Singh Bansal said, “The Sikhs of Kabul is a short documentary based on the testimonies of Afghan Sikhs who have been part of Afghanistan’s rich history since the early 18th century. Prior to 1991, there were approximately over 200,000 Sikhs living successfully in Afghanistan. However, since 2001 this once proud community has been caught up in the political crossfire compelling them to flee in haste as refugees abroad. Today the meagre Sikh population in Kabul numbers only about 250, where there are no schools for the children and no work. Sikhs are scraping a living to survive in this war torn country.”

Riaz Ravat, Deputy Director of St Philip’s Centre added, “The position of minority communities in some parts of the world is profoundly problematic owing to the discrimination and hardship faced by them. Minorities such as the Sikhs of Afghanistan have enriched societies and contributed to the economic, social, cultural and political fabric of so many nations. It is vital that we do not forget the daily difficulties faced by communities under such pressure and I hope that the film enables global agencies to redouble their efforts to protect minority groups around the world”.

The Sikhs of Kabul takes place on Wednesday 4th May from 6-7.30pm at St Philip’s Church, Evington Road, Leicester LE2 1HN.
