kathnaa kathee na aavai toṭ.
According to one’s capability, everyone has tried to describe the tale of the Divine, but His description does not come to an end. – Guru Nanak Sahib, Guru Granth Sahib, Page 01

Message: This verse is from stanza 3 of Jap Ji which says, people try to guess and describe the Creator in various ways according to their own capabilities. Some sing of His immense power and others sing of His gifts that they enjoy. Some sing of His noble virtues and others say it is difficult to comprehend His mysteries. Some say that He fashions the body from dust, others say He eventually takes life away. Some perceive Him to be far away and others see Him near at hand. There is no dearth of perceptions about Him. Countless people have tried repeatedly to describe His greatness. But nobody knows all His attributes.

His provisions too are endless. Throughout the ages, we have been continuously consuming His unending gifts. The Giver just keeps on giving endlessly, whereas we the receivers tire and eventually pass away.

Everything in the universe is unfolding and functioning according to His hukam. He is ever blissful and watches His creation unfolding, but remains beyond the influence of anyone.

Yet, our attempts to describe the Creator are only feeble approximations because the Divine chronicle is indescribable.

Etymology: From Sanskrit kathaa (conversation, speech; story) → Pali kathaa (talk, story).
