SANGRUR, Punjab—Over the past 5 years, every day, multiple dead bodies have been continuously recovered from the Bhakra Canal at the Khanauri barrage. The Punjab Government is yet to determine the cause of death of these bodies. The video footage from March 2015 shows several of these dead bodies being recovered from the barrage in a single day.

Inderjit Singh Jaijee, a well-respected author from Punjab opinionated, “Since only a very short portion of the Bhakra canal is in Sangrur district and the maximum length is in the districts of Ropar, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala, it can safely be asserted that the overwhelming majority of the bodies in the canal would have come from Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib and Ropar.”
“If we know for certain that not less than 400 bodies were observed in the Bhakra canal at Khanauri in a single year, we know that the number of suicide deaths in the upstream districts would vastly exceed 300 for ten years. In ten years the number of bodies would be 4,000. Not all would be suicide victims; some would be the victims of accidents and murders. It is our estimate that three-fourths of these bodies are suicide victims (3000) but even if one assumes that only half of the bodies were suicide victims that is still 2,000 persons.”
Jaijee, convener of the Movement Against State Repression, has been at the forefront of seeking Government action to take corrective measures. He states that despite the issue being of grave importance, no concrete step has been taken to curb the number of suicides.
The matter is not new, it was first brought to the attention of the Punjab & Haryana High Court in 2011. As per directions of the High Court, lights were to be installed at the barrage, however the matter has been taken rather lightly by the authorities as no cameras or lights have been installed. So far, the Police Post at Khanauri has been making a daily register with a count of dead bodies that are recovered. However, till this date, no action has been taken to identify these bodies.
Having failed at getting attention of the Punjab Government, the MASR filed a case before the National Human Rights Commission in November 2015. The Commission asked the Punjab Government to submit a report detailing actions taken to recover and identity these dead bodies.
However, months later, NHRC is still awaiting a response.

Your answers are 1) If you don’t like the the desperate living conditions in your own homeland created by corrupt politicians then instead of changing the circumstances either put up with them with slave mindset or emigrate to somebody’s elses country where living conditions are humane and just?! Presumably you would say this to that poor Sikh student who committed suicide in Ludhiana just recently because (according to his own note on facebook) he was facing demands from corrupt police officers for money lest they put a false drug case against him. 2) You are going to send someone who is desperate enough to try and commit suicide to prison because he dared to be so depressed and desperate? Presumably you will dispense with any need for a court to find him guilty if that person looks like a Sikh too. 3) Religiously you want Granthis to be trained by psychiatrists rather than actually providing psychiatric mental health services which your friend King Badal has decreed are unnecessary in Punjab as there are not mental health problems there. A Granthis role is to practise Sikhi and dispense Gurmat but I understand you want them to stop spreading religious instruction. 4) The Khalsa is effectively a buddy system – how many Hindus did Khalsa Sikhs save throughout history? 5)’Let out Sikh Pope give anti suicide sermon’?!!!!! Sikhs dont need to do any of those things you have listed as Chardi Kala is a way of life.

3) Religiously :– Have a capsule psychiatric course for Granthis on how to prevent Suicide and declare it as a Sin. What are you talking about? Sikhism does not have a notion of ‘sin’. Granthis need only a course in Gurmat to provide the correct counselling. Those who are dealing with sangat who have psychological issues need to be be able to refer them to psychiatric services which of course in Punjab is now impossible as the Badals have absurdly declared there are no mental health issues so no need to invest in such services for the people.

3 ) Give them understanding of the changing world we live in and forces which influence these change.
4) Set up a Suicide help line ,posters ,social media and society
5) Orders by King Amarinder ,CM PS Badal , Akal Takth head ,SGPC head ,Famous Sikhs like Fauja Singh ,Milkha Singh , A Bindra banning SUICIDES.
6) Debts be made acceptable way of life
Corrupt men like Amarinder, Badal and Makkar have no credibility and what punishment are you going to give people who have been made so desperate under their rule that they see no way out but suicide from their misery? Giving ‘orders’ and calling Amarinder and Badal ‘Kings’ is not democratic. The only way to help Punjab’s youth is Sikhi which teaches Chardi Kala.
Punjab police and CBI need to investigate and arrest. the culprits.
Apart from the suspicion the Punjab Police may be the culprits considering their track record of extra judicial killings you are left trying to explain why more than two thousand people have felt the desperate need to commit suicide rather than live under the reign of your beloved King of Punjab Badal.
