BREAKING: 70 year old Political Prisoner Waryam Singh’s Release Approved by Union Home Minister

2015-02-19_bhai_waryam_singh_upNEW DELHI—Sardar Waryam Singh, a 70 year old political prisoner currently lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly Jail may finally find some relief as his release has been sanctioned by the Home Minister’s office.  Rajnath Singh signed the official papers for Singh’s release earlier today.

Two months ago, following the transfer of Gurdeep Singh Khera to Punjab from Karnataka, it was believed that Waryam Singh would be the next in line to be transferred to Punjab.  Waryam Singh was convicted under the TADA law and is currently detained at the Bareilly Central Jail since 1990.

Waryam Singh’s release was sought by Bapu Surat Singh, an 83 year old political prisoner who is on hunger protest since January 16.

Waryam Singh was sentenced on January 10, 1995 under TADA act offences 3 and 4 and I.P.C. charge of 120-B. He is undergoing a life sentence and has been incarcerated for 25 years. After his arrest he was never released from prison in any shape or form. He has an impeccable record for good behaviour and his name hasn’t featured in any further criminal investigations. The point to note is that Major Singh a co-defendant of Waryam Singh, was also sentenced to life and has been freed by the state government, whereas Waryam Singh was not released.

  1. All these piecemeal releases, and steady steps, are being taken by the Badal-BJP Indian establishment, in reaction to the uncomprimising, unstopping Sikh struggle – the torture of Kulbir Singh Barapind, shooting of Jaspal Singh in Gurdaspur, Bapu Surat Singh hunger strike, mass protests, Raam Raheem protests, Bhai Joga Singh Nihang action, etc. The Sikhs are roaring forward, making a trail of heroic history, fighting an evil, vicious bastion of imperial power like India. The dirty tricks, vicious police and paramilitary repression, lock ups, torture, are not working! India is looking for ways to appease the Sikhs, by these piecemeal concessions. The small, committed, courageous, Sikhs are winning! He who dares wins! Who says nothing is being achieved! Struggle and resistance versus passive submission! Sikhs continue to make inspiring history for the world to see and be motivated by! Tragically, our gurdwara committees, have hoarded, suppressed, corrupted our history, culture and civilisation. They want to keep it locked away in boxes. Not to be shared, spread and given out to the wider world!!!!
