Sign Petition: Call on Major Retailers to Remove Offensive Halloween Costumes

WASHINGTON DC, USA—The Sikh Coalition has successfully persuaded Sears, Spirit Halloween and Jet.com to stop selling costumes resembling Osama bin Laden. However, major retailers (including Amazon) still have these types of costumes up for sale.

What You Can Do To Help
SIGN THIS PETITION asking all remaining businesses to remove this costume from sale and display. Community pressure is critical to ensuring that these businesses understand the harm and prejudice caused by their actions.

Apart from promoting stereotypes about turbans and beards that lead to violence against Sikhs and other minorities, these costumes insult those who lost loved ones during the 9/11 attacks.

“Businesses have the legal right to sell offensive items, but they also have a responsibility to exercise good judgment and common sense,” said Arjun Singh, Director of Law and Policy for the Sikh Coalition. “We are thankful to Sears, Spirit Halloween and Jet.com for promptly removing these items and we are working hard to ensure that Amazon, Oriental Trading Company and Fun World will follow their example.”

In response to seeing the costumes online and receiving numerous concerned messages from community members, the Sikh Coalition swiftly contacted the businesses who sell the costumes. In some cases, sellers agreed within 24 hours to remove the costumes from sale and display.

The Sikh Coalition has contacted Amazon, Oriental Trading Company, as well as the costume supplier Fun World (a division of Easter Unlimited, Inc.), to demand removal of the costumes from sale and displays.
