The President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabadhank Committee (SGPC), Avtar Singh Makkar, was today controversially honored at Sri Akal Takht Sahib for his apparent seva (services) for the betterment of the Panth, education, Sikhi Prachar, and humanitarian work during his tenor as President. He has been honored ‘Shiromani Sevak’ (‘Supreme Servant’) title by Singh Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh, who previously honored Chief Minister Prakash Badal with ‘Fakar-E-Qaum’ Award. The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib announced that Avtar Singh Makkar was being awarded the ‘Shiromani Sevak’ for his historical service to spreading Sikhi, helping the environment and helping humanity during his ten year tenor as President of SGPC and Chancellor of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Vishav University.
No where in Sikh history has any Sikh being recognised or awarded with the title of ‘Shiromani’ (Supreme) ‘Sikh’ or ‘Sevak’. Bhai Mardana Ji’s lifetime dedication and service to Guru Nanak Dev Ji was not awarded or honored with ‘Shiromani Sevak’. Bhai Manjh and Bhai Bidhi Chand’s service to the fith Guru, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji, stands out in Sikh history for their personal sacrifice for the service of the Guru. However, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji did not give them the award of ‘Shiromani Sevak’. Bhai Mati Das Ji, Bhai Sati Das Ji and Bhai Dyala Ji made historical sacrifices and service to the Sikh nation but where not awarded or honored ‘Shiromani Sikh’ or ‘Shiromani Sevak’. The list goes on.
Now, comparing those amazing Sikhs to President Avtar Makkar: Mr Makkar does seva using the fuel paid by the Sangat, he does seva using a car paid by the Sangat, he works and lives in air conditioning property provided by the Sangat, and he gets paid for his ‘job’ by the Sangat. He has security guards paid by the Sangat. Furthermore, he gets SGPC workers to put his shoes on for him and tie his shoe laces. Now, where is the sacrifice for the Panth involved which makes him more deserving then the likes of Bhai Manjh Ji, Bhai Bidhi Chand Ji and countless other Gursikhs in history?
It is claimed by the Giani Gurbachan Singh that Mr Makkar has made an historical contribution to the Panth with his service to Sikhi Prachar. What are the results of that Prachar? Patit-punna (Apostacy) is on the rise, the majority of SGPC members are far from living by the Sikh Rehat Maryada and induldge in intoxicants and alcohol, there are scandals involving SGPC workers and Maryada at Sri Harmandir Sahib and other shrines managed by the SGPC is being diminished day by day. There are non-Amritdharis who cut their hair, smoke and support anti-Sikh groups that cook Langar at Sri Harmandir Sahib and other shrines in violation of the Sikh Rehit Maryada published by the SGPC. There are non-Amritdharis preparing and delivering Karhah Prashad at Sri Harmandir Sahib and other shrines in violation to directives given by Sri Akal Takht Sahib to the SGPC on 14th June 1985. In the past ten years the amount of Deras and fake God men has increased. Mr Makkar and the SGPC has failed to implement the Sikh Rehit Maryada in its own managed Gurdwaras, Takht Sri Patna Sahib and in Gurdwaras across Punjab’s villages. During Mr Makkar’s ten years of management the historical heritage of the Sikh community has been further damaged, lost and neglected.
