1984 Anti-Sikh Riots Witness Says, Sajjan Kumar Encouraged The Mob To Kill Sikhs

Delhi, India—A prosecution witness in the 1984 anti-Sikh Pogroms identified the Congress leader Sajjan Kumar as one of the accused while deposing in the Delhi court on Thursday.

According to the sources  a witness from the prosecution Sheela Kaur identified Sajjan Kumar while deposing before the Sessions Judge  said that Congress leader Sajjan Kumar has egged the mob during the riots to kill Sikhs in which she lost her  husband Balveer Singh and her father-in-law Basant Singh and Brother-in-law Balihar Singh. She alleged that the mob has dragged them from the house and killed them during the riots.

The matter was adjourned for September 17 for the next hearing for recording her statement.

Mr Sajjan Kumar, Mr Brahmanand Gupta and Mr Ved Prakash are being under investigation in connection with the riots which killed many men in Sultanpuri area in west Delhi after assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi  who was killed by his Sikh Body Guards. These riots have killed 2800 all over India out of which 2,100 deaths from Delhi.

Based on the recommendation of the Justice G.T. Nanavati Commission, which had investigated the events that led to the violence, two charge sheets have been filed by CBI against Mr Sajjan Kumar and the others in January 2010 in riots cases registered in 2005.

Various charges have been framed including charges of murder and rioting, offence of spreading enmity between two communities in July 2010 against Sajjan Kumar, Brahmanand Gupta, Peru, Khushal Singh and Ved Prakash in this regard.

The plea filed by Sajjan Kumar seeking quash of charges against him has been rejected by Delhi High Court in 2013.
