AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Sri Akal Takht Sahib appointed Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh today conferred “Shiromani Sewak” title to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar.
Justifying his decision to confer the award, Giani Gurbachan Singh said, while addressing Sikh congregation outside Sri Akal Takht Sahib, that the SGPC chief had been honoured for his “contributions” made for spreading Sikhi and “services” given to the welfare of the humanity.
Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib Jathedar Giani Mal Singh, Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Gurmukh Singh, Takht Sri Patna Sahib Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh and huge number of SGPC functionaries were also present on the occasion.
Panthik leaders have criticized the move of Jathedar and stated that such an award holds no significance as Takht and SGPC jathedars are acting as puppets in hands of Badal family. The award hinted towards possible “honourable” exit of the SGPC President before the 2016 SGPC polls.
