Kejriwal Announces Compensation Package for Sikh Genocide victims in Delhi

November-1984-Sikh-Houses-BurntNEW DELHI—Arvind Kjeriwal led Delhi state government has announced to hand over compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to each victim family of the Sikh genocide of November 1984. In a meeting of Cabinet Ministers headed by Arvind Kejriwal, the government took this decision as the Union Government has failed to distribute compensation packages to all victim families.

The Union government of India had announced last year to provide compensation of Rs. 5 lakh to the victim families.  17 such families were given cheques last year in December. Delhi state government has taken this decision after taking the Union government into confidence. The Central government will later pay the Delhi state government. Approximately, 1,200 million rupees will be distributed among 2300 victim families.

It is noteworthy that as per Government records, more than 3000 Sikhs were burnt alive or were murdered brutally by the mobs in a three days long pre-planned genocide of the Sikhs following the assassination of the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Not only in Delhi, also in other cities of India, Sikh families were massacred by the Hindu mobs. The accused culprits of the genocide are still enjoying Government patronage despite significant allegations.
