Panthik Bodies Submit Memorandum to the Governor Against Arrests of Sikh Activists in Punjab

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—A number of organizations today submitted a memorandum to the Governor of Punjab at Raj Bhawan against the stormed raids and arrests of Sikh activists by the Punjab Police. Terming the arrests as violation of human rights, the bodies urged the governor to put control over it.

After delivering the memorandum to the Governor, the leaders held a Press conference at Pankaj Hotel. Addressing the media, renowned historian Prof. Gurdarshan Singh Dhillon said that the Punjab government has failed in maintaining the standard operating procedures among the police in the state. Jathedar Balwant Singh Nandgarh, Jathedar Gurnam Singh Sidhu, Dr. Bhagwan Singh, S. Jaswant Singh Mann, S. Gurjant Singh Kattu, Bhai Jaskaran Singh Kahan Singh Wala, Bhai Dhian Singh Mand, Bhai R.P Singh etc. were present during the press meet.

Punjab government has lately been detaining Sikh activists by leveling false charges from section 107/151 of Cr.P.C (Code of Criminal Procedure). Recently on the late night of August 5, at the behest of Punjab government, Punjab police launched a massive crackdown on the workers of Sikh bodies to prevent them from participating in a demonstration to be held outside the DMC Hospital on August 6. Some of the arrested leaders were released on August 6, while others are still being detained.
