UK Sikh Volunteers Launch Weekly Homeless Food Drive

ILFORD, UK—Jagdeep Singh Sohal, 31, from Ilford, went out with about 15 volunteers and joined forces with Midland Langar Seva Society members to give out food in High Road, Ilford, last week.

The idea to set up a van in Lidl’s car park came after he and fellow worshippers at Singh Sabha London East, High Road, Seven Kings, were thinking of ways to “give back” while working out in the gurdwara gym.

The group is hoping to extend its weekly homeless feed, which has its food supplied by the Midlands charity, to neighbouring boroughs in the coming months.

Jagdeep said: “One of the three main pillars of Sikhism is to vand ke chakna – to share the fruits of one’s labour with others before considering oneself.

“Thus living as an inspiration and a support to the entire community regardless of religion, race or colour.”

He added: “We are giving back to people that are less fortunate.”

The group provided hot meals to about 30 people on its first outing.

“We provide the food and then we clean up afterwards so there’s no mess,” said Jagdeep.

“This is just one way of helping out. It’s our duty to help people whether they’re Christian, Sikh or Muslim, it’s for everyone and we’re just tying to make a difference.”

The volunteer said he had been inundated with people trying to get involved with the project but welcomed anyone else who wished to help out.

He said: “Most of the volunteers are in their 20s but it’s open to all.”

The group distribute every Tuesday at 8pm.

Jagdeep added: “We have already, after one week, been contacted by local businesses that have pledged food donations in order for us to use for distribution and expand our operations.”
