AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—As per sources, executive committee of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will be discussing the matter of appointing chief secretary in a meeting to be held on June 30 at Sri Fetehgarh Sahib.

The SGPC president Avtar Singh Makkar confirmed that the matter was included in meeting’s agenda. He said final decision would be taken after discussing the matter.

It is notable that the SGPC had decided to appoint the chief secy directly. Implementing its decision, it had advertized the vacancy two times to invite the candidates for walk-in-interview. As per the advertisement, the chief secy was to be paid salary of Rs 3,00,000/- which caused deep anger among Sikh Sangat. Various Sikh organizations oppose the controversial move terming it as grave misuse of the money donated by Sangat.

Following the opposition, the SGPC postponed the interview. Now the decision will only be implemented after permission of the executive panel. Some sources said the decision would be finalized in the meeting.

It is worth mentioning that there is no provision of the post of chief secretary in SGPC in Sikh Gurdwara Act 1925 and the post of secretary is recognized as supreme one. Amendment is needed in the Act for the appointment and it could be done by SGPC’s general house only.

And existence of the house depends upon ruling of Supreme Court as case of “Sehajdhari” Sikh is still pending. Till that only executive committee could take decisions on daily routine matter urgent for its working. As per sources, internal circles of the SGPC are also opposing the move.
