June ’84 Ghallughara: SGPC, Police tighten Security Arrangements in Amritsar Sahib

Sri Akal Takht SahibAMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—In order to prevent any untoward incident on 31st anniversary of June 1984 Ghallughara (holocaust) to be observed on June 6, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has tightened the security in view of last year bloody clash that had tarnished image of Sikhs across the world. The SGPC and Panthik organizations are quite vigilant this year.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib appointed Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh has directed all the organizations to maintain peace and harmony on the historical occasion. He held meetings with representatives of some Panthik bodies to ensure calmness. Although the SGPC has claimed that it did not make any special arrangements but its officials are patrolling inside Sri Darbar Sahib complex actively. It suggests that the Gurdwara body is vigilant about the event.

As per sources, the SGPC has directed its task force and other employees to keep the environment under their control. In addition, it also remains in contact with local administration and the Police officials who would present there in civil dress. In this regard, both the sides have conducted a meeting also.  Besides, the SGPC may also impose restrictions on carrying sharp-edged weapons other than ‘kirpan’ inside the Darbar Sahib Complex on June 6.

The SGPC will also be roping in additional staff from other gurdwaras being managed by it.

On the other hand, heavy police force has been deployed around Sri Darbar Sahib and important places in the city. Amritsar Police Commissioner Jatinder Singh Aulakh said around 900 police personnel from other districts would be deployed to ensure tight security on the occasion apart from the city police.

Pro-freedom Sikh groups are making appeals to Sikh Sangat to attend the anniversary at Sri Akal Takht Sahib but they directed its rank and file to maintain peace. They are making sincere efforts to ensure peace during the function.
