Makkar Asks Pakistan Gurdwaras to Follow “Amended” Nanakshahi Calendar

SGPC conference 2AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—On pretext of supremacy of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Avtar Singh Makkar asked  Pakistan Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (PSGPC) to follow the calendar released by the SGPC recently.

Makkar made the remarks when he was asked by media persons to comment on the PSGPC’s decision to observe the martyrdom day Guru Arjan Dev Jee in Gurdwara Dehra Sahib Lahore on June 16 as per original Nanakshahi Calendar.

Makkar alleged that the PSGPC was defying supremacy of Sri Akal Takht Sahib saying that ‘it is playing in the hands of some foreign based Sikhs’. He said that Pakistan government was also interfering into matters of Sikhs.

He added, “The PSGPC seems to be functioning under the guidance of certain individuals who are responsible for instigating it against the Akal Takht Sahib.”

The SGPC and PSGPC have been at loggerheads over the date of Shaheedi Gurpurb. Some days ago, the PSGPC has also refused to hand over Kar Sewa to Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) for following ‘amended’ version of Nanakshahi Calendar. The Kar Sewa was handed over to Parmjit “Singh” Sarna led Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi) which is supporter of original Nanakshahi Calendar.
