FATEHGARH SAHIB, Punjab—Gurmeet Pinky, cop responsible for a Sikh youth’s murder in 2001 has been reinstated as police inspector.  Reinstatement of Pinky comes at the same time Sikh organizations are struggling to seek release of political prisoners who have completed their terms.  However, unlike Pinky, they are still languishing in jails.

While Pinky has been re-appointed as a police inspector, 82 year old Bapu Surat Singh Khalsa has concluded 127 days of hunger strike.  While Bapu Surat Singh is nearing death, the Punjab Government has refused to entertain his demands.

Pinky is said to have proximity with Punjab Director General of Police, Sumedh Saini.  During the peak of militancy period in Punjab, Pinky allegedly received promotions after killing Sikh youth in fake encounters.

DGP Sumedh Saini has refused to comment on the re-in-statement of Pinky.  He has been vocal against release of Sikh political prisoners.  He had earlier supported Pinky’s pre-mature release from the Nabha jail even before the completion of sentence.  Pinky was released secretly by the Punjab Government, despite the Supreme Court stay on pre-mature releases.
