Sikh Community Activist Reportedly Dead in Nepal Earthquake

NEPAL-DISASTERS-EARTHQUAKEKATHMANDU, Nepal—A prominent Sikh community activist Sujan Singh (50) and his son Parvinder Singh (24) based in Kathmandu have reportedly died in the deadly earthquake in Nepal.  Sujan Singh was a restaurant owner and a respectable member of the Sikh community.

Father and son were running the restaurant under the historic Dharahara tower in Kathmandu from the past 30 years. Originally, they belonged to Poonch district of Kashmir. Dharahara Tower was built in 1832 on the orders of the queen and tower had recently reopened to the public.

A Sikh businessman and president of Guru Nanak Sikh Sangat (Kathmandu) Pritam Singh today confirmed death of the father and son. He told that Sujan Singh was an active member of various Sikh organizations and played a proactive role in projects initiated by the community in Kathmandu.

Pritam Singh told Sikh24 that along with help of the SGPC, DSGPC and Khalsa Aid, local Sikhs have also started langars (free community meals) for people of all backgrounds.  “We have made arrangements for langar to 500-600 people every day. We are hoping that some provisions sent by the SGPC and other Sikh organizations would reach here in a day or two,” he added.
