Nanak Shah Fakir: State Wide Protest on March 25

Nanak ShahCHANDIGARH, Punjab—Hindi movie ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’ which is slated to be released on April 17, has drawn flake from the Sikhs across the world for hurting religious sentiments.  The movie allegedly abuses basic Sikh ethos by personifying Guru Nanak Sahib, his respected family members and aide Bhai Mardana ji. Sikhs have demanded the controversial film be banned.

Meanwhile, various Sikh organizations including Sikh Students Federation (Mehta) is all set to hold state level protests on March 25 against this movie. The activists of the Sikh body will be submitting memorandum to deputy commissioners in every district of Punjab to seek a statewide ban.

Talking to media persons, SSF (M) president Bhai Parmjit Singh Khalsa said that it is very unfortunate to present Guru Sahib and his family members in the film by its director and producer. He declared that his organization would oppose this film strongly and would not allow it to be screened in cinemas.

In addition, Sikh Youth of Punjab also took serious notice of this movie and threatened stir if the movie is not banned. Its leaders have appealed all the Sikhs to join hands to stop the release of the movie.

It is noteworthy that Sikh Rehat Marayada strictly prohibits idol worship as well as worship of the portraits of Sikh Gurus, Bhagats etc. Instead Sikhs and all the human beings are guided by Guru Granth Sahib to follow the principle of presence of one supreme God who is free from birth and death. ‘Nanak Shah Fakir’ is promoting importance of portrait worship. Some Sikh ideologues have termed this negative trend as ‘spiritual suicide’.

  1. I totally agree with the fact to ban this movie. Reasons are:

    1. It has been presented as a commercialised project as a form of a movie. Movies are made to entertain people and gain profit in terms of money. So why they did so to Sum up Guru ji’s life and HIS teachings to give it a shape of movie and bring to the cinema to earn profit out of this.

    2. We all regard Guru Nanak Dev ji as GOD. so will it be justify to honour HIS teachings to be presented in such a way in a form of Box office collection.

    3. Today’s era we needed humanity messages I agree, but this is not the correct form to give message. If one really want to serve the community then he/she can easily find the other way to pass the messages to younger generation by not hurting religious sentiments and not giving it a commercialised form.

    Thank you!

  3. YOU PEOPLE ARE FOOLS , YOU NEVER SPEAD SIKH TO NON-SIKH, ITS WHY WE ALL SAY YOU ARE TALIBAN MUSLIMS. WHEN ANYONE DOES PROMOTE SIKHI YOU MAKE SUCH FOOLISH POINTS, GOD WILL PUNISH YOU AND FAMILY FOR HARMING SPREAD OF SIKHI. SIKHS NEED NO ENIMIES WHEN THEY HAVE SOMANY FOOLS IN THE RANKS. I LOVE THE FILM, ITS HOW I CONVERTED TO SIKHI FROM CHRISTIANITY

    • I whole heartedly agree with you, Jennifer. So long we have this attitude, people of course will think us as Taliban, because they do not see much difference between us and Muslims.

    • It’s annoying me how Sikhs don’t want Sikhi to be around the world. It’s annoying me how all the old people at the Gurdwara complain that youth isn’t involved or interested yet when we are for example, this movie will show and give us alot, you all wanna ban this sorta stuff. I’m a young Sikh and I honestly love being Sikh. I use to be confused about my faith until last year I really found my faith. Sikhism is beautiful and it should be promoted to everyone especially to the youth. If this movie goes ahead maybe some young Sikh’s that were confused like me might just find their path. I don’t understand Punjabi that much so it makes it harder for me to understand stories. Think about the foreign born Sikhs, don’t just think about yourselves. Our religion is beautiful until people like you come and try to do things your way. This movie will be something to cherish we will see our Guru’s life. Interesting right?
