CHATTISINGHPORA: No Justice to the Sikhs Even After 15 Years by the Indian Government

Jammu & Kashmir—The Sikh Organization For Prisoner Welfare passed a statement condemning lack of justice to the Sikh community in the murder of 35 Sikhs 15 years ago in Chattisingpora.  SOPW stated that “15 years later there is still no enquiry to uncover the truth behind the killings, the families of the victims still await justice, there is no freedom for Sikhs to live as equal citizens of India.”

Commenting about the incident on March 20, 2000, SOPW stated that –

On the evening of 20 March 2000, about 20 unidentified persons, widely believed to be Indian Security Forces, massacred 35 innocent Sikh men and boys in a cold blooded and brutal manner. The Sikhs of Chittisinghpura had been celebrating Hola Mohalla at the local Gurdwara, when they were singled out from the villagers, many of whom were also Muslim and Hindu.

Some of the Sikh widows spoke of their husbands were called out by name. They were lined up and shot in execution style, without explanation or mercy. The killers were heard to shout “Jai Hind” as they fired their guns. They stopped to take swigs from their bottles of alcohol, before they departed into the night, unhindered. The massacre happened to coincide with the visit to India of the then president of the United States, Bill Clinton.
