Video: Sikh Political Prisoner Kulwant Singh ‘Valetiya’ Restarts His Life

In the early 1980’s and 90’s, Kulwant Singh was labelled a ‘terrorist’ under TADA and framed under the Arms & Explosives Act. He endured many years in prison under these false charges and faced continual police harassment, even after he was released on bail. Knowing if he was caught again, he would not receive a fair trial and would face wrongful imprisonment, he managed to escape from India and made it to Germany first and then on to England. This is how he has the nickname ‘Valetiya’ meaning ‘from abroad’.

In 2007 after spending so long under the police radar, he returned to India and began living under a different name. But, eventually the police caught up with him leading to his arrest in 2011 and the old false cases against him were reopened. In December 2014, a Jalandhar Court acquitted Kulwant Singh and after spending 3 years in Nabha Jail, he returned home to restart life as a farmer.
