Chandigarh Police Moves Court for Jagtar Singh Tara’s Remand

Tara 28CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Chandigarh police on Friday lodged a plea in a local court here seeking police remand of Sikh freedom fighter and Babbar Khalsa activist Bhai Jagtar Singh Tara in connection with Burail jail break case.

Bhai Tara was arrested by Thai Police after a gap of 11 years and was extradited to India. He is facing life imprisonment in case of assassination of former Chief Minister Beant “Singh”, under whose supervision, human rights were violated in Punjab gravely.  Eleven years ago, he escaped Burail jail along with his aides Bhai Jagtar Singh Hawara and Bhai Parmjit SIngh Bheora.

This past Tuesday, the court of Civil Judge (Junior Division) Harpreet Kaur dismissed the remand application moved by the Operations Cell seeking police custody of Tara, and allowed his bail application.

The Chandigarh police demanded his custody by appealing in a higher court.

The appeal made by Chandigarh police to court reads that after the arrest of (Bhai) Jagtar Singh Hawara on July 7, 2005, the police was able to seek his police remand for nine days which was later extended for four more days. Also, (Bhai) Paramjit Singh Bheora, who was arrested on March 29, 2006, was in police custody till 13 days. However, Bhai Tara’s custody was declined as the offences under which the charges were framed were bailable offences.

Along with Bhai Tara, Bhai Hawara and Bhai Bheora have also been convicted in the Beant assassination case of 1995.
