During its previous probe, the CBI had failed to collect any evidence against the cult chief and it had to return empty handed.  Dera followers, too, had not shown any cooperation during the investigations.  It was alleged that these followers feared for their lives and refused to speak out against Gurmeet Ram Rahim.

The probe which was carried out by the CBI became successful after it was able to trace some former dera followers, who had been castrated on influence of Gurmeet Ram Rahim.  CBI also quizzed doctors at Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s ancestral village, Gurusar Modia in Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan, in relation to the castrations.  It is being believed that castrations were performed here.  A witness in the case has alleged that along with him, 400 other men, had castrations performed after the cult chief promised an opportunity to make them meet god.
