Coventry, UK—Members of Sikh Union Coventry have put on their walking shoes to help the visually impaired.

A cheque for £1,500 was handed to Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind in Earlsdon following a sponsored charity walk.

More than 100 members of the Sikh community of all ages walked more than nine miles on November 16th last year, starting at the Ramgarhia Gurdwara on Foleshill Road and touring all the Gurdwaras in Coventry in order to mark the martyrdom of the Ninth Guru Tegh Bahadur in 1675.

The event raised sponsorship in aid of two charities: Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind and NMC – Neuromuscular Centre Midlands.

Rosie Brady, trustee and co-founder of the Resource Centre, said: “We are deeply grateful to the Sikh Union and its members for this terrific show of support for the work we do here – we are honoured to have been chosen as a beneficiary of the walk.”

Bali Panesar, of Sikh Union Coventry, said: “This centre is a vital resource for people who are visually impaired. One of the pillars of the Sikh faith is to help people who are less fortunate than ourselves. This donation clearly demonstrates that we are working towards it.”

The Sikh Union’s next project involves visiting an eye camp and a girls-only orphanage they continue to support in Delhi, India.
