Human Rights Groups Oppose Extradition of Jagtar Singh Tara

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Extradition of Jagtar Singh Tara has been highly opposed by various Human Rights Groups in India and abroad.  The deportation took place despite the preventive measures taken by Sikh organizations.  A four-member team of Punjab Police brought him to Punjab after Indian authorities tricked him into signing a statement that resulted in his deportation.

It is worth mentioning that human rights groups of Thailand also opposed the extradition but the Thai authorities could not be convinced.  Bhai Tara’s deportation is against UN policies which bar extraditions to countries where prisoners could face torture.  Bhai Tara faces imminent threat of torture, including elimination by the police in Punjab.

Bhai Tara was arrested in Thailand on January 5, 2015 on culmination of an operation developed in co-ordination with Indian central agencies based on specific leads provided by Punjab Police. The operation had started in August 2014 when the Counter Intelligence wing of the Punjab Police had tracked Jagtar Singh Tara to Thailand.

A Thailand court ordered his extradition on January 7, 2015. Punjab Police remained in constant touch with central agencies and Thailand authorities for expediting the administrative measures for his extradition and on successful completion, extradition has been effected on January 16, 2015.

A separate Punjab Police team headed by Jaskaran Singh Teja, Superintendent of Police, Detective, Patiala brought him from the Delhi airport to Patiala.

He was convicted in case of assassination of the then chief minister of Punjab, Beant “Singh”.
