Sikh Groups are Flying Out Supplies for Kuala Krai Flood Victims

2014-12-28- Kuala Krai floodKUALA KRAI, Malaysia—As the floods in the East Coast worsen, many concerned citizens and groups are making it their priority to give any form of relief they can to those affected.

United Nations (UN) affiliate group United Sikhs is one of those that is getting supplies ready for its own Kelantan Flood Relief mission.

The group’s representative, Rishiwant Singh Randhawa, said 700kg of items comprising canned food, packet drinks, biscuits and hygiene kits were being prepared for the mission.

Working together with other Sikh groups, the former Radio 4 deejay, fondly known as “The Flying Singh”, said they have made it their mission to serve those affected regardless of race or religion.

The relief items will be flown via Malaysia Airlines cargo, sponsored by another group, Setia Alam Sikhs, to the Kota Baru airport.

“A close friend of mine, Captain Bagwan Singh of Helistar, has offered to then personally fly the items to the police barracks at Kuala Krai using his own helicopter.

“The items will then be distributed to flood victims there,” Randhawa told The Rakyat Post.

He added that his group would be collecting and packing the items at the Kampung Pandan Gurdwara (Sikh temple) before they are flown out on Tuesday, welcoming others who wish to donate items as well.

They also held a prayer at the temple for those affected by the floods.

“There are actually three Sikh families that are affected by the floods in Kuala Krai, but the aid is for all the victims.

“We recognise the human race as one and we are here to serve them,” he said.

Randhawa said his first humanitarian mission was 10 years ago today, when he and several others carried out the Global Sikhs Tsunami Relief to help those affected in Acheh.

He has been conducting relief missions with close friends ever since, having carried out close to 30 missions in and outside Malaysia.
