Punjab Taking Steps to Fund the Fight Against Cancer

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—The Punjab Cabinet introduced a bill related to making an amendment in section 6 of the Punjab State Cancer and Drug Addiction Treatment Infrastructure Fund Act, to check for further spreading of cancerous diseases and rising inclinations towards drugs besides just treatment and rehabilitation for patients who are suffering from the disease and to upgrade their buildings, machinery, equipment, etc. for pooling their financial resources.

The ruling for this decision was decided in a meeting held by the Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Badal for the Council of Ministers on December 21, 2014.

The introduction of the bill was aimed to ensure that the cess amount was also levied on those properties which were earmarked (at present it was paid only when a property was sold or auctioned) and paid by the bidder, and not by the collecting agency. (Punjab Housing & Urban Development Department etc.) The amount collected would be fully credited in the Cancer Fund of Health & Family Welfare department.
