LUDHIANA, Punjab—Despite summons by the the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against senior Akali leader Bikram Majithia, the Punjab Government has turned down demands to take action against him. Majithia is currently serving as Punjab Revenue Minister, and he is also the brother of Harsimrat Badal.

While speaking with the press, Chief Minister Parkash Badal and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal stated that there was no need for Majithia to step down after summons were issued against him.  “When proof comes out, we will decide what action to take,” stated the Badals as they attempted to prove Majithia’s innocence.

“There is no substantial evidence against Majithia available at this point and the summons don’t mean anything,” they added.  “We cannot act against Majithia until the court orders.”

Sukhbir Badal stated that the summons were issued to malign the name of the Shiromani Akali Dal.  He stated that there is a zero tolerance policy against drug trafficking.  “We have sent many high level drug dealers behind bars,” said Sukhbir Badal.  He said that drugs were coming to Punjab through Pakistan or from other Indian states.  He said the Centre Government needed to resolve the issue.
