AMRITSAR SAHIB, Punjab—Six members of the Malaysian Punjabi “Bikerz” group went on an 18-day charity mission and rode their bikes from Petaling, Jaya to Amritsar, Punjab to foster peace and unity. The Punjabi Bikerz left on November 3rd and reached their destination at the Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar on November 20, 2014. The Bikerz said it had been a truly great journey even though they had to face many obstacles and challenges along the way.

One of the Bikerz, Ravin Singh who is a lawyer said the Bikerz had planned their peace and unity ride since 2010. “We knocked on many doors and explored many avenues to make this trip a reality. During our mission we were always asked how our journey was, initially it was easy but it got tougher along the way. The ride from Petaling Jaya to Chumpon, Southern Thailand was long and we got wet in the rain many times and had to make unplanned spots to spend the night. “We also encountered problems during border crossings,” said Ravin Singh.

The Punjabi Bikerz group was made in 2008 for the sole purpose of uniting Sikhs in the Malaysia area. The Bikerz club founding member Gurwinder Singh said they hope to pave the way for other groups and clubs from various races and religions to attempt similar endeavors. “While we are a Sikh group, we also have a non-Punjabis with us as there is no requirement that only Sikhs can make the trip to Amristar, Chua Chern Kwang is the most experienced rider in our group and is the backbone of our team. “Despite not being a Punjabi, Chua has shown great passion for this ride, he has even grown a mustache for this ride to blend in the group of Punjabi men,’’ said Gurwinder Singh was a laugh.

Since its inception, the Punjabi Bikerz have organized many charity rides, visited many Gurdwaras in Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand as a sign of their commitment to the cause. The Bikerz hope to be an inspiration to the younger generations and hope that their ride for peace and unity will some how impact the lives of people in a positive way.
