Sikh Political Prisoner Bhai Gurmeet Singh Released on 28 Day Parole

CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Sikh political prisoner Bhai Gurmeet Singh, who is serving life imprisonment in the Beant assassination case, was released on Thursday from Burail Jail on parole 28 days.

Prior to this, Bhai Lakhwinder Singh Lakha had been released on parole on October 29.

He was received by his mother Bibi Surjit Kaur, sister Manjit Kaur and her husband Bhupinder Singh, younger sister Varinder Kaur, Panthik leader Bhai Harpal Singh Cheem, Bhai Kamikar Singh, Bibi Kulbir Kaur Dhami (Gur Asra Trust). After being released he was welcomed and honoured wih a Siropaa by Panthik leaders.

Bhai Gurmeet Singh said that efforts made by the Sikh nation and his family members to ensure his release bore fruits. He thanked to Panth and Sikh leaders across the world.

After being released, he paid obeisance at Gurdwara Amb Sahib Patshahi 7th Mohali where he was honoured by the Granthi Singh. Later on, he left for his home city Patiala.

His mother Bibi Surjit Kaur said that bonds of 1 lakh rupees were filed for the parole release of Gurmeet Singh.

Notably, Shamsher Singh, third convict in the Beant assassination case, has not received parole so far.

As per information, a hearing for the permanent parole of the trio is set for February 9, 2015 in Punjab & Haryana High court.

The trio was also released on parole around one year ago after the 44 days long hunger strike staged by Bhai Gurbaksh Singh Khalsa at Gurdwara Amb Sahib Mohali.
