Sikh Youth in Singapore Faces Imminent Threat to Life If Deported to India

SINGAPORE—A Sikh youth who was arrested recently in Singapore by Interpol faces an imminent threat to his life in India.

The Singapore Government has started necessary procedures for deporting Ramandeep Singh, the Sikh youth in question, to India. Meanwhile, Sikh leaders have expressed deep concern about the threat to his life.

Bhai Avtar Singh Khanda (President, Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar) from UK expressed worry that Punjab Police would kill Ramandeep Singh in a fake encounter if the Singapore Government hands him over to India.

Punjab Police are notorious for fake encounters, in which the police question and torture a suspect before gunning them down and planting evidence to make it look like a shootout.

Khanda said that Bhai Ramandeep Singh’s whole family have been victims of extensive police torture and his maternal uncle Bhai Darshan Singh is still imprisoned in India. He humbly appealed to all Sikh Organizations and Human Rights Organizations to take necessary actions to stop the deportation of Bhai Ramandeep Singh from Singapore. Lastly, Bhai Khanda requested the Singapore Government to halt the deportation of Bhai Ramandeep Singh, as his life is in danger.
