CHANDIGARH, Punjab—Senior Akali leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, vice president of SAD (B), has urged the Modi government to pass a resolution to express regret over the 1984 Sikh genocide during the next session of Parliament.

Ramoowalia said, “Miserably, all political parties have ignored this issue for 30 years. Parliament has not even observed a two-minute silence in memory of those killed in the deadly pogrom.”

“No financial aid has been announced for the victims so far. The Union Government has announced a package for the flood victims in Jammu and Kashmir. But for the genocide victims, there has been no such package,” he said.

The SAD (B) leader said that even opposition leaders in Parliament had not moved a resolution to condemn the killings, adding, “This wrong should be rectified during the coming session of Parliament.”

Aam Aadmi Party leader and senior lawyer HS Phoolka said his party would also ask the Modi government to move a resolution in this regard. He said, “Sikhs were targeted and killed. Their houses and shops were burnt. All this deserves to be condemned by Parliament.”

In addition, the secretary of the state CPI, Bant Brar, said that such a resolution in Parliament would send the right signals.
