Former AISSF Leaders Resolve to Revamp National Sikh Students’ Body

Office Add. & SSF LogoCHANDIGARH, Punjab—On the 70th foundation day of All India Sikh Students Federation (AISSF), some of its former presidents and office-bearers met on the campus of Punjab University and passed a resolution to reorganize the organisation structure.

The sole students’ organization of Sikhs was established in September 13, 1944, and it had played vital role in Akali movements such as the Punjabi Suba Morcha in the 1960s. In Sikh freedom struggle, it continued to play a dominant role.  Notably, AISSF president Shaheed Bhai Amrik Singh was closest aide of Shaheed Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who was blessed with martyrdom while fighting against Indian army at Sri Akal Takht Sahib on June 6, 1984.

Former president of AISSF, Jaswant Singh Mann, said that at present, various factions of the organization were in hands of non-students and certain groups took part in politics. He said there was a dire need to restore the organization as student body.

He said, “We will first establish its units in all colleges and universities, and later other educational institutions.”

Some of AISSF leaders joined the political stream and have been elected MLAs, as well as ministers.

An all-India conference of the AISSF would be held in November, Mann added.
