LUDHIANA, Punjab—The Sikh Relief team has welcomed the release of Bibi Sukhjinder Kaur, who was detained in Ludhiana along with her husband Bhai Balbir Singh “Bira” in a fabricated case.  While welcoming the release of Bibi Ji, the Sikh Relief team stated that over five years of her life were wasted due to prolonged court hearings.  The following statement was released by the Sikh human rights and charity organization in relation to the case of Bhai Balbir Singh and Bibi Sukhjinder Kaur –

In 2009 Sukhjinder Kaur was newly married to Balbir Singh and the happy couple were travelling back from Hazoor Sahib when they were involved in a police shootout at Ludhiana Railway station. Both of them were placed under arrest and charged under the Arms Act and the Unlawful Activities Act.

It has taken five years to finally clear Sukhjinder Kaur’s name.

Yesterday, in the Ludhiana Sessions court of Judge Sarbjit Singh Dhaliwal, Sukhjinder Kaur was fully acquitted in the case and her husband, Balbir Singh Bira’s sentence was converted from life under the Unlawful Activities Act, to a normal life sentence. This means that Balbir Singh can now hope to be freed sooner.

Jaspal Singh Manjhpur and Gurmit Singh Rattu were the advocates representing the couple in court.

Balbir Singh Bira remains behind bars in Nabha Jail as he has been framed in 9 cases overall and Sikh Relief will continue the fight for his freedom.

Our team was there to honour Sukhjinder Kaur’s sacrifice to the panth, as she took her first steps of freedom. (In the photo either side of Sukhjinder Kaur are; Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, RP Singh Sikh Relief team member, Sukhjinder Kaur’s father and Parminder Singh Sikh Relief team member)
