Court Sentences Bhai Balbir Singh Bira for Life; Wife Acquitted

LUDHIANA, Punjab—The Court of Additional Sessions Judge Sarabjit Singh Dhaliwal on Friday pronounced rigorous imprisonment to Bhai Balbir Singh Bira for life in a  murder case registered against him and his wife. His wife, Sukhjinder Kaur, however was acquitted of all charges.

Bhai Bira has been defamed by calling him “Bhootna” by biased India media.

A fine of Rs 20,000 was also imposed upon him. The court also held that failure to deposit the fine would attract 1 year additional imprisonment. He was also sentenced on the charge of attempt to murder and under the Arms Act. All sentences would run concurrently.

Bhai Balbir Singh Bira and Sukhjinder Kaur were booked under FIR No. 123, dated 28 August 2009 at police station GRP, Ludhana, registered under sections 302, 307 (Indian Penal Code), 25/54/59 Arms Act and sections 15 and 16 Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

The court convicted Bhai Balbir Singh of charges under section 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 24, 54, 59 (Arms Act), while he was acquitted of all charges under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

This case was registered against him on the basis of an incident that reportedly took place in Ludhiana police station on August 27, 2009, that had resulted in death of tea vendor at the station.
